Prepare Simple Syrup

Make the Simple Syrup
In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Once dissolved, remove from heat and let it cool. Transfer to a sealed container and refrigerate until ready to use.
Mix the Cocktail

Combine Ingredients
In a mixing glass, add 2 oz of Knob Creek or Basil Hayden Dark Rye, 2 dashes of orange bitters, and 1/4 oz of the house-made simple syrup.

Stir
Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir the mixture for about 30 seconds until well chilled.

Strain and Serve
Strain the mixture into an Old Fashioned glass filled with a large ice cube.
Garnish

Garnish the Cocktail
Express the oils from a piece of orange peel over the drink by holding it over the glass and gently twisting it. Drop the peel into the drink along with a maraschino cherry as garnish.
