Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel the russet potatoes and grate them using a box grater or a food processor. Place the grated potatoes in a bowl of cold water to remove excess starch. Let them soak for about 10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Onion

While the potatoes are soaking, peel and finely chop the onion.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Drain and Dry the Potatoes

After soaking, drain the potatoes and rinse them under cold water. Use a clean kitchen towel to squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible.

  2. 4

    Heat the Oil and Butter

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil and butter over medium-high heat until the butter is melted and starts to bubble.

  3. 5

    Cook the Hashbrowns

Add the grated potatoes and chopped onion to the skillet, spreading them out evenly. Press down with a spatula to form an even layer. Cook without stirring for about 5-7 minutes, or until the bottom is golden and crispy.

  4. 6

    Flip the Hashbrowns

Carefully flip the hashbrowns in sections using a spatula. Cook for another 5-7 minutes, or until the other side is golden and crispy.

  5. 7

    Season and Serve

Sprinkle the cooked hashbrowns with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve immediately while hot.
