Method

Pudding Preparation

  1. 1

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, whisk together granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, and salt until well mixed.

  2. 2

    Add Milk

Gradually add the milk to the dry ingredients, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.

  3. 3

    Cook the Mixture

Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook the mixture, stirring constantly, until it thickens and starts to bubble (about 5-7 minutes).

  4. 4

    Whisk in Egg Yolks

In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Once the pudding has thickened, temper the egg yolks by slowly adding a small amount of the hot pudding mixture to the yolks, whisking constantly. Then pour the yolk mixture back into the saucepan.

  5. 5

    Add Vanilla

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.

Banana Layer Assembly

  1. 6

    Slice the Bananas

Peel and slice the ripe bananas into thin rounds.

  2. 7

    Layer the Bananas

In a trifle dish or serving bowl, place a layer of sliced bananas at the bottom.

Whipped Cream Preparation

  1. 8

    Whip the Cream

In a mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the cream until stiff peaks form.

Assembling the Banana Pudding

  1. 9

    Combine Layers

Pour half of the cooled pudding over the banana layer, then add a layer of Nilla wafers followed by more banana slices.

  2. 10

    Repeat Layers

Repeat the layering process with the remaining pudding, bananas, and wafers.

  3. 11

    Top with Whipped Cream

Spread the whipped cream evenly on top of the last layer.

  4. 12

    Garnish

Garnish with additional sliced bananas and crushed Nilla wafers if desired.
