Basil Lemonade

Blood Orange Layer

Method

Basil Lemonade

  1. 1

    Make the Basil Syrup

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Add 1 cup of fresh basil leaves and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep for 30 minutes. Strain the basil leaves out and set the syrup aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare Lemonade

In a large pitcher, combine 1 cup of basil syrup with 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 3 cups of cold water. Stir well and adjust sweetness by adding more sugar if desired.

Blood Orange Layer

  1. 3

    Juice the Blood Oranges

Cut the blood oranges in half and juice them using a citrus juicer until you have 1 cup of fresh blood orange juice.

  2. 4

    Sweeten the Juice

In a small bowl, mix the 1 cup of blood orange juice with 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Final Touch

  1. 5

    Assemble the Drink

In a glass, add 1/2 cup of ice cubes, followed by 1 cup of basil lemonade. Slowly pour in 1/2 cup of the sweetened blood orange juice, allowing it to create a layered effect. Finally, top off with 1/2 cup of San Pellegrino sparkling water for fizz.

  2. 6

    Garnish and Serve

Garnish with a sprig of basil and a slice of lemon or blood orange. Serve immediately and enjoy your refreshing North End Cooler!
