Method
Meatballs
- 1
Prepare the Meatball Mixture
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground veal, ground pork, ricotta cheese, egg, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
- 2
Shape the Meatballs
Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 3
Bake the Meatballs
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
Arrabbiata Sauce
- 4
Sauté the Onions and Garlic
In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- 5
Add Tomatoes and Season
Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, and season with salt and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 6
Finish with Fresh Basil
Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before removing the sauce from heat.
Assembly
- 7
Combine Meatballs and Sauce
Once the meatballs are baked and the sauce is ready, add the meatballs to the sauce and let them simmer together for an additional 5 minutes.
- 8
Serve
Serve the spicy ricotta meatballs hot, garnished with whole fresh basil leaves and grated Parmesan cheese.
