Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

In a fine-mesh strainer, rinse the long-grain white rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Chop Aromatics

Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves. Set aside.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté Aromatics

In a medium saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, stirring frequently.

  2. 4

    Toast the Rice

Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan with the onions and garlic. Stir to coat the rice in the oil or butter, and toast for about 2-3 minutes until the rice is slightly golden.

  3. 5

    Add Broth and Seasonings

Pour in 2 cups of chicken or vegetable broth. Add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 bay leaf. Stir well to combine.

  4. 6

    Cook the Rice

Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

  5. 7

    Fluff and Serve

Once cooked, remove the saucepan from heat. Discard the bay leaf. Use a fork to fluff the rice and stir in the chopped fresh parsley. Serve warm as a side dish.
