Pasta

Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Spaghetti

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Tomato Sauce Preparation

  1. 2

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

  2. 3

    Make the Sauce

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, and let simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chopped basil before serving.

Meatballs/Sausage Preparation

  1. 4

    Prepare the Meatballs or Sausage

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef or Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, and chopped parsley. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

  2. 5

    Cook the Meatballs or Sausage

Form the mixture into meatballs (about 1 inch in diameter) or use sausage links. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the meatballs until browned and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally. Alternatively, cook the sausage links according to package instructions.

Assembly

  1. 6

    Combine and Serve

Add the cooked spaghetti to the tomato sauce, tossing to coat. Serve the spaghetti topped with meatballs or sausage, and garnish with additional fresh basil and Parmesan cheese if desired.
