Base Layer Preparation

Prepare the Coffee Mixture
In a shallow bowl, combine the espresso coffee, sugar, and coffee liqueur (if using). Stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Soak the Ladyfingers
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they are soaked but not soggy. Lay half of the soaked ladyfingers in a single layer at the bottom of a rectangular dish.

Combine with Mascarpone
Add the mascarpone cheese and vanilla extract to the egg yolk mixture. Gently fold until well combined.

Whip the Cream
In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

Combine Mixtures
Carefully fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully incorporated.
Assembly and Finishing Touches

Layer the Mixture
Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the layer of ladyfingers in the dish.

Add Another Layer
Repeat the process with the remaining ladyfingers, dipping and layering them, followed by the rest of the mascarpone mixture on top.

Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to set.

Before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder and sprinkle with dark chocolate shavings if desired.
