Method
Matcha
Sift matcha
Sift 1 teaspoon ceremonial-grade matcha powder into a small bowl using a fine mesh sieve to remove any clumps.
Bloom matcha
Add 2 tablespoons of hot water (about 80°C / 175°F — just below boiling) to the sifted matcha. Using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small milk frother, whisk vigorously in a zig-zag (M or W) motion until the matcha is fully dissolved and a light froth appears on the surface, about 15–30 seconds.
Sweeten
Stir in 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (or your chosen sweetener) into the whisked matcha until dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste.
Milk
Heat and froth milk
Heat 1 cup milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until steaming and small bubbles appear around the edge (do not boil), about 3–4 minutes. If using a microwave, heat for 60–90 seconds until steaming. If you prefer a frothy latte, froth the warm milk using a milk frother, handheld whisk, or by vigorously shaking the milk in a tightly sealed jar for 20–30 seconds.
Add flavor
If using, stir 1 teaspoon vanilla extract into the warmed milk and mix briefly.
Combine
Pour the warmed milk into your serving cup over the prepared matcha. Hold back the foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top to create a layered latte.
Garnish & Serve
Finish
Optionally dust the top with up to 1 teaspoon matcha powder for presentation. Drizzle up to 1 teaspoon honey or simple syrup if you want extra sweetness.
Serve immediately while hot. Stir before drinking to blend the matcha and milk fully.
