Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt.

  2. 2

    Incorporate Butter

Cut the unsalted butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

Stir in the egg yolk and cold water until the dough comes together.

  4. 4

    Knead and Chill

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 2 minutes. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Cook the Filling

In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and green bell pepper. Sauté until softened.

  2. 6

    Add Meat and Spices

Add ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Stir in cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.

  3. 7

    Cool the Filling

Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool before assembling the empanadas.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 8

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 9

    Roll Out Dough

On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8-inch thickness.

  3. 10

    Cut Dough Circles

Using a round cutter (about 4-5 inches in diameter), cut circles from the dough.

  4. 11

    Fill Empanadas

Place about a tablespoon of the filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and press the edges to seal.

  5. 12

    Apply Egg Wash

Brush the tops of the empanadas with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

  6. 13

    Bake

Place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
