Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass (optional)

If you prefer a cooler drink, place the Old Fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

Add simple syrup (or a measured 1/4 oz) to the chilled or room-temperature glass.

  3. 3

Add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters and 1 dash of orange bitters (if using) directly into the syrup in the glass.

  4. 4

Add the measured 2 oz of bourbon or rye whiskey to the glass.

  5. 5

Add the large ice cube(s) to the glass. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and lightly diluted. Aim for a slight chill and about 10–15% dilution to open the spirit's flavors.

  6. 6

Express the orange peel: hold the peel with the outside facing down over the glass about 2–3 inches above the surface, give it a firm twist to spray the oils over the drink, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass (or discard if you prefer).

  7. 7

Garnish with a maraschino cherry if desired. Serve immediately.

Tools

  1. 8

Use the jigger to measure the whiskey and simple syrup accurately.

  2. 9

Use the bar spoon to stir gently and the peeler or knife to cut the orange peel for garnish.
