Pasta

Cheese Sauce

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of salted water to a boil.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used to cook the pasta, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour to the pot, whisking continuously for about 1 minute to create a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps, and continue to cook, stirring frequently until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese

Lower the heat and add 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, stirring until fully melted and smooth.

  5. 8

    Season Sauce

Season the cheese sauce with 1 teaspoon of salt, 0.5 teaspoon of black pepper, and 0.5 teaspoon of mustard powder. Mix well.

Combining and Serving

  1. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until the pasta is fully coated.

  2. 10

    Prepare Topping (Optional)

If using, mix 0.5 cup of bread crumbs with 1 teaspoon of paprika in a small bowl.

  3. 11

    Serve

Serve immediately for creamy mac and cheese, or transfer to a baking dish, sprinkle with the breadcrumb mixture, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.
