Fried Green Tomatoes

Prepare the Tomatoes
Slice the green tomatoes into 1/2 inch thick slices. Season with salt and pepper.

Set up Breading Station
In one bowl, place the buttermilk. In another bowl, mix the cornmeal, flour, salt, and pepper. Dredge each tomato slice in flour, dip in buttermilk, and then coat with the cornmeal mixture.

Fry the Tomatoes
In a large skillet, heat the cooking oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, fry the coated tomato slices for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Prepare the Chow Chow
In a medium saucepan, combine the diced green tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, apple cider vinegar, sugar, mustard seeds, and salt. Stir well.

Cook the Chow Chow
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, until the vegetables are tender and the mixture thickens. Let cool before serving.
