Method

For the Biscuits

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to combine.

  3. 3

    Cut in Butter

Add the unsalted butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. 4

    Add Milk

Pour in the milk and stir just until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Shape the Biscuits

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick circle. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter or a glass.

  6. 6

    Bake the Biscuits

Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

For the Gravy

  1. 7

    Cook the Sausage

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until browned and cooked through, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.

  2. 8

    Add Flour

Once the sausage is cooked, sprinkle the tablespoon of flour over the sausage. Stir to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.

  3. 9

    Add Milk

Gradually add the milk to the skillet while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook and stir until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 10

    Season the Gravy

Add salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes to taste. Stir well to combine.
