  1. 1

    Prep and gather

Gather all ingredients. If using fresh basil, rinse and pat dry. Grate Parmesan cheese if not pre-grated.

  2. 2

Fill a large pot with 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Add 1 teaspoon salt to the water.

  3. 3

Add the fusilli pasta to the boiling water. Cook according to package directions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

  4. 4

While pasta cooks, place tomato sauce in a medium saucepan and warm over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. 5

Stir in 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper into the sauce; season with more salt to taste if desired.

  6. 6

Once pasta is cooked, reserve 1/4 cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta.

  7. 7

Add drained pasta to the warm sauce; toss to coat. If the sauce seems thick, add a little of the reserved pasta water to loosen.

  8. 8

Stir in 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese and 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil. Toss until cheese is melted and evenly distributed.

  9. 9

Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Serve immediately with extra Parmesan on top if desired.
