Country Fried Steak

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Steak

Pound the beef round steak to about 1/2 inch thickness. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

  2. 2

    Dredging Station

Set up a dredging station with three bowls: one with flour, one with buttermilk and beaten eggs, and one with a mixture of flour, salt, and pepper.

  3. 3

    Coat the Steak

Dip each steak into the flour, then into the buttermilk mixture, and back into the flour to coat thoroughly.

  4. 4

    Fry the Steak

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the coated steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  5. 5

    Make the Gravy

In the same skillet, reduce the heat and stir in the remaining flour (about 1/4 cup) to make a roux. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook until thickened. Season with salt and pepper, and add gravy mix if desired.

  6. 6

    Prepare Mashed Potatoes and Veggies

Prepare the mashed potatoes according to your preferred recipe. Steam or sauté the seasonal vegetables until tender.
