Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Combine

Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz pure maple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters into a mixing glass or large Boston glass.

  2. 2

    Add ice

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (about 3–5 large cubes) so the liquid is well chilled and diluted to taste while stirring.

  3. 3

    Stir

Stir gently and steadily for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 full rotation strokes) until the outside of the mixing glass feels very cold and the drink is slightly diluted — roughly 15–20% dilution is typical for spirit-forward stirred cocktails.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

If desired, chill an old-fashioned glass (rocks glass) in the freezer or by filling it with ice water for 30–60 seconds, then discard the water/ice.

  5. 5

    Strain

Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer, double-strain the cocktail into the chilled old-fashioned glass over a single large clear ice cube (or two large cubes) to keep the drink cold with slow dilution.

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils from an orange peel over the surface of the drink by holding the peel skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm squeeze, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of spicy rye, bitter-sweet amaro, rounded vermouth, and the subtle maple sweetness.
