Tea

Method

Tea

  1. 1

    Measure and heat water

Pour 2 cups (about 475 ml) fresh cold water into a kettle and heat to just before boiling, about 175–185°F (80–85°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a simmer and remove from heat as soon as small bubbles form but before a full rolling boil.

  2. 2

    Warm teapot or cup (optional)

Pour about 1/4 cup hot water into the teapot or cup, swirl to warm the vessel, then discard the warming water. This step helps maintain infusion temperature.

  3. 3

    Add tea

Place 2 teaspoons loose green tea (or one standard tea bag) into the warmed teapot or cup. If using loose leaf, use an infuser or strainer.

  4. 4

    Pour water and steep

Pour the heated water (175–185°F / 80–85°C) over the tea. Cover the teapot or cup and steep for 2–3 minutes for a light, fresh flavor; steep up to 3.5 minutes for a fuller taste but avoid longer steeping to prevent bitterness.

  5. 5

    Strain and serve

Remove the infuser or tea bag, or strain the leaves into a cup. Taste and adjust steep time on future brews if needed (shorter to reduce bitterness, slightly longer for more strength).

Optional additions

  1. 6

    Sweeten or flavor

If desired, stir in up to 1 teaspoon honey or sugar while the tea is warm so it dissolves easily. Add a slice of lemon or a sprig of fresh mint for brightness. Milk is not traditional and may clash with green tea, but add 1 teaspoon if you prefer a creamier cup.
