Tea

Optional add-ins

Method

Tea

  1. 1

Bring fresh, cold water to a gentle boil (about 200–205°F / 93–96°C). For best flavor, use filtered water.

  2. 2

Measure 1 teaspoon of Earl Grey loose-leaf tea per 1 cup (240 ml) of water. If using tea bags, use one tea bag per cup.

  3. 3

Place the tea in a teapot or infuser inside a cup. Pour the hot water directly over the tea to bloom the bergamot oils and release aroma.

  4. 4

Steep for 3 to 5 minutes depending on desired strength: 3 minutes for lighter, 4 minutes for medium, 5 minutes for brisker/bolder flavor. Avoid steeping longer than 5 minutes to prevent excessive bitterness.

  5. 5

Remove the tea leaves or tea bag promptly after steeping to stop extraction.

Serving & Optional Add-ins

  1. 6

    Plain hot Earl Grey

Pour the brewed tea into a cup and enjoy as is to appreciate the bergamot aroma.

  2. 7

    With milk

If adding milk, warm or froth 2 tablespoons of milk and stir into the brewed tea. Taste and add more if desired.

  3. 8

    Sweetened

Stir in 1 teaspoon of simple syrup or honey to sweeten. Adjust to taste.

  4. 9

    With lemon

If using lemon, add a slice of lemon. Do not add milk and lemon together (they may curdle).

  5. 10

    Iced Earl Grey

For iced tea, brew the tea double-strength (2 tsp per 1 cup) and steep 3–4 minutes. Remove leaves, let cool 5–10 minutes, then pour over a glass filled with ice. Sweeten while warm if desired so it dissolves evenly.
