Finish & Garnish
Method
Espresso / Strong Coffee
- 1
Prepare coffee
Brew two shots (about 60 ml) of espresso. If you don't have an espresso machine, brew very strong coffee concentrate (use about 60 ml of hot, concentrated brew). Keep hot and set aside.
Chocolate Base
- 2
Make chocolate syrup
In a small heatproof cup, combine 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar. Add 1 tablespoon hot water and stir vigorously until smooth and fully dissolved, creating a glossy chocolate mixture with no lumps.
Milk
- 3
Heat and froth milk
Pour 10 oz (about 300 ml) of milk into a small saucepan and warm over medium-low heat until it reaches 60–65°C (140–150°F) or is steaming but not boiling. Whisk vigorously, use a milk frother, or shake in a sealed jar to create light foam. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
Assembly
- 4
Combine
Add the hot espresso (or strong coffee) to the chocolate base and stir until smooth and integrated. Pour the warmed, frothed milk into the coffee-chocolate mixture, holding back foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top.
- 5
Garnish
Top with 2 tablespoons whipped cream if using, then dust with a teaspoon of cocoa powder or sprinkle chocolate shavings. Serve immediately.
