Method
Prep
- 1
Chill glass
Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail so it's nicely chilled.
- 2
Brew espresso
Brew a single shot (about 1 oz) of fresh espresso. Allow it to cool slightly (30–60 seconds) so it won't dilute foam too quickly but still warm enough to help emulsify when shaken.
Mixing and Serving
- 3
Combine ingredients
Add 2 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 1 oz freshly brewed espresso, and 0.5 oz simple syrup into a cocktail shaker. Add a generous handful of ice (about 1 cup) to the shaker.
- 4
Dry shake (optional but recommended)
If you want a thicker, velvety crema, first close the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 8–10 seconds to emulsify the espresso and syrup with the alcohol.
- 5
Wet shake
Add ice if you didn't already, or continue if ice is already in the shaker, and shake very hard for 12–18 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels very cold and you see a frothy crema forming.
- 6
Double strain and serve
Remove the ice from the chilled glass if used. Using the shaker's strainer (and a fine strainer if available), pour the cocktail into the chilled glass, holding back any large ice shards. Aim to produce a smooth, foamy top layer.
- 7
Garnish
Carefully place 3 coffee beans on the foam in a triangle or line for a classic garnish. Serve immediately.
