Refried Beans Ingredients

Method

Refried Beans Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Beans

If using dried pinto beans, rinse them and soak them overnight in water. The next day, drain and rinse the beans, then cook them in a pot with enough water to cover them until tender, about 1-2 hours. If using canned beans, skip to the next step.

  2. 2

    Cook Onions and Garlic

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil or lard over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another minute.

  3. 3

    Add Beans

Add the cooked pinto beans to the skillet along with the cumin, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

  4. 4

    Mash the Beans

Using a potato masher or the back of a fork, mash the beans to your desired consistency. If the mixture is too thick, add water or bean broth gradually until you reach your preferred texture.

  5. 5

    Simmer

Allow the refried beans to simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning to taste.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve warm as a side dish or as a filling in tacos, burritos, or quesadillas.
