Desserts

  1. 1

    Prepare the Sponge Cake

Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a round cake pan. In a mixing bowl, prepare your sponge cake batter according to the package instructions or your favorite recipe. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely on a wire rack.

  2. 2

    Assemble the Ice Cream Layer

Once your sponge cake is completely cooled, slice it horizontally if needed, to create a level surface. Place the sponge cake on a serving platter. Scoop the vanilla ice cream and spread it evenly over the sponge cake. Shape it into a dome if desired. Place the assembled cake in the freezer for at least 2 hours to allow the ice cream to firm up.

  3. 3

    Make the Meringue

In a mixing bowl, combine the egg whites, granulated sugar, cornstarch, salt, and water. Using an electric mixer, beat the mixture on high speed until stiff peaks form and the meringue is glossy, about 5-7 minutes. Add vanilla extract and mix until combined.

  4. 4

    Cover with Meringue

Remove the cake from the freezer. Using a spatula, spread the meringue all over the ice cream layer, making sure to seal the edges well to prevent the ice cream from melting. You can create peaks and swirls in the meringue for a decorative finish.

  5. 5

    Bake the Baked Alaska

Preheat your oven to 500°F (260°C). Place the meringue-covered cake in the oven for about 3-5 minutes, or until the meringue is lightly browned. Keep a close eye to prevent burning. Once done, remove from the oven.

  6. 6

    Serve

Allow the Baked Alaska to sit for a few minutes before slicing. Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious dessert!
