Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a rocks glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass add 2 oz blended Scotch, 0.5 oz Blandy's Madeira, 0.5 oz Bénédictine, and 2 dashes Prospect bitters. If you prefer slightly sweeter, add up to 0.25 tsp simple syrup.

  3. 3

    Stir

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice and stir briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (target temperature around 0–5°C / 32–41°F).

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard ice or water from the chilled rocks glass. Place a large ice cube or sphere into the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Double-strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice.

  6. 6

    Garnish & finish

Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down over the glass and giving it a quick squeeze, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the cocktail as garnish.

Serving

  1. 7

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the interplay of smoky Scotch, nutty raisiny Madeira, herbal Bénédictine, and aromatic bitters.
