Ginger Syrup (makes ~8 oz)
Method
Ginger Syrup
- 1
Make ginger syrup
Combine sliced fresh ginger, 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and simmer 8–10 minutes to infuse a pronounced ginger flavor. Remove from heat and let steep 30 minutes for stronger aroma. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing on solids to extract liquid. Cool to room temperature. Refrigerate in a sealed container; syrup will keep ~2 weeks.

Build and shake
Chill a rocks glass (or coupe) by filling it with ice or placing it in the freezer for a few minutes. In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz bourbon, 0.75 oz Amaro Montenegro, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.25 oz fresh orange juice, 0.5 oz ginger syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Fill the shaker with ice (about 4–6 large cubes or ~1 cup).
- 3
Shake
Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is well-chilled and slightly frosted on the outside.
- 4
Strain and serve
Discard ice from the chilled serving glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the glass over a large fresh ice cube or serve neat in a chilled coupe, depending on preference. If serving on the rocks, place one large ice cube in the glass then strain the drink over it.

Final tasting note
Taste and, if desired, add a drop more ginger syrup for sweetness or a small squeeze of lemon for brightness. The finished cocktail should balance bourbon warmth, the bittersweet herbaceousness of Montenegro, lively citrus, and warm ginger spice.
