Preparation

Utensils

1. Prepare workspace

Clean and sanitize the surface where you will handle the utensils. Wash your hands thoroughly or put on food-safe disposable gloves to avoid contaminating the utensils.

2. Retrieve utensils

Remove one disposable fork and one disposable knife from their bulk packaging or dispenser. Handle by the handles only, avoiding contact with the tines (fork) or blade edge (knife) near the tip.

3. Inspect each utensil

Visually and manually check the fork and the knife for defects: cracks, sharp plastic shards, incomplete molding, or foreign material. Run your fingers along the handles (carefully along the knife edge) to feel for rough spots. If either piece is damaged or contaminated, discard and select replacements.

4. Assemble the set

Place the fork and knife together so the handles align and the functional ends (tines/blade) point in the same direction. If you are preparing the set for handoff, hold them by the handles and place them directly into the customer bag or a clean sleeve/packet if one is available. Do not touch the working ends after inspection.

5. Safety reminders for use

When using the disposable knife, cut away from your body and keep fingers clear of the cutting line. Use the fork’s tines for spearing and holding food while cutting. Avoid prying or leveraging with the plastic knife to prevent breakage.

6. Disposal instructions

After use, dispose of the fork and knife according to local waste guidelines. If the utensils are labeled recyclable and your locality accepts that plastic type, rinse briefly and place them in the recycling stream; otherwise, place them in regular trash. If the utensils are compostable (check labeling), place them in the appropriate compost bin.
