- 1
Check the can
Confirm the canned soda (1 x 12 oz can) has an intact seal and no bulging or severe dents. If the can is already chilled to your preference, proceed to serving.
- 2
Open safely
If the can is cold and you are ready to serve, place your thumb on the top rim, hold the can steady, and slowly lift the tab to open. Tilt the can slightly away from your face and others while opening to avoid any spray. Let pressure settle for 1–2 seconds if it fizzes heavily before tilting to drink or pour.

Add soda to glass
If you poured into a glass in the previous step, allow foam to subside for 5–10 seconds. If you opened the can and are serving directly from it, simply present the can. If pouring from the can into the glass with ice, pour gently down the side to limit foaming and fill to about 1/2 inch below the rim.

Quick chill (optional)

Set up ice bath
If the canned soda is not cold and you want a rapid chill, use the quick-chill method: in a bucket or large container, combine 3 cups crushed ice, 500 ml cold water, and 2 tbsp coarse salt. Stir briefly to mix—the salt lowers the freezing point and speeds cooling.
- 8
Submerge can and wait
Submerge the sealed 12 oz can fully in the salted ice bath. Gently agitate the can in the bath every 30–45 seconds to promote even cooling. Chill for about 2–5 minutes until the can feels cold to the touch.
- 9
Remove, dry, and serve
Remove the can from the ice bath, dry the outside with a towel, then follow the 'Open safely' and 'Serving & garnish' steps above to open and serve.
