Loose Leaf Tea

Optional Add-ins

Method

Loose Leaf Tea

  1. 1

    Measure ingredients

Weigh 2.5 g loose-leaf green tea (about 1 rounded teaspoon depending on leaf size) and measure 250 ml fresh, filtered water for one serving.

  2. 2

Heat water to the correct temperature

Heat the water until it reaches about 75–80°C (167–176°F). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a near boil then remove from heat and let sit 2–3 minutes to cool to the proper temperature. Avoid using fully boiling water, which can make green tea bitter.

  3. 3

    Warm your vessel

Pour a small amount of the hot water into your teapot or cup to warm it, swirl briefly, then discard that warming water. This helps stabilize temperature during steeping.

  4. 4

Add tea leaves and pour water

Place the 2.5 g of loose tea into an infuser, gaiwan, or directly into the warmed teapot/cup. Pour the heated water (75–80°C / 167–176°F) evenly over the leaves.

  5. 5

    Steep

Steep for 1.5–2.5 minutes depending on the tea type and your taste. Lighter, delicate greens (like gyokuro) often do best at ~1.5–2 minutes; sturdier greens (like some senchas) can be 2–2.5 minutes. Do not exceed ~3 minutes to avoid excessive bitterness.

  6. 6

    Strain and serve

Remove the infuser or strain the leaves from the brewed tea and pour into your cup. Let cool slightly (30–60 seconds) until comfortable to drink.

  7. 7

    Re-steeping (optional)

Many high-quality green teas can be re-steeped 1–2 times. For the second infusion, use water at the same temperature and increase steep time by ~30–45 seconds. Adjust based on flavor.

Optional Add-ins

  1. 8

Add sweetener or garnish after steeping

If desired, add 1 tsp honey, a slice of lemon, or a fresh mint sprig to the tea after you have strained it. Stir gently to dissolve honey. Taste and adjust—add more honey if you prefer sweeter, or more lemon/mint for extra brightness. Do not add lemon while steeping, as it can accelerate flavor changes.
