Method
Chill and prepare
Refrigerate sake
Place the unfiltered cold sake bottle in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving so it is well chilled (40–50°F / 4–10°C). Nigori-style or unfiltered sake is best served cold to showcase its creamy texture and sweet rice character.
Chill serving ware
About 15–30 minutes before serving, put your carafe and sake cups in the refrigerator or freezer for a short chill (do not freeze vessels solid). Chilled glassware keeps the sake cold without over-diluting with ice.
Serve
Gently shake the bottle once or invert it a couple times (with cap on) to redistribute any rice solids suspended in the unfiltered sake. Avoid vigorous shaking to prevent frothing. This ensures a uniform, creamy texture.
Open the bottle carefully. If there is slight pressure from carbonation, open slowly over a sink and pour a small amount off first.
Pour the chilled sake into the chilled carafe, leaving any heavy sediment in the bottle if you prefer a clearer pour. For a full unfiltered experience, pour gently and include the cloudy portion.
If you prefer the sake slightly diluted or less viscous, add up to 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of cold water into the carafe and stir gently once. Taste and adjust — some people prefer undiluted for full flavor.
Garnish each cup with an optional mint sprig or a thin wheel of lemon or yuzu perched on the rim. Do not overpower — garnish is optional and purely decorative/aromatic.
Serve immediately while cold. Encourage guests to sip and enjoy the creamy texture, floral and rice notes, and mild sweetness typical of unfiltered sake.
Cleanup and storage
Recap any remaining sake and store it in the refrigerator. Consume within 7–10 days for best quality; gently invert once before pouring remaining amount to remix sediments.
Rinse carafe and cups with warm water and allow to air dry.
