Bocce Balls
Method
Bocce Balls
- 1
Prepare the Meat Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the Italian sausage, ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, eggs, minced garlic, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture.
- 2
Form the Bocce Balls
Divide the meat mixture into equal portions. Flatten each portion slightly, place a mozzarella ball in the center, and carefully wrap the meat around the cheese, rolling into a smooth ball that completely encloses the mozzarella.
- 3
Brown the Bocce Balls
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, searing on all sides until browned, about 6–8 minutes total. The balls do not need to be fully cooked at this stage.
- 4
Simmer in Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and pour the marinara sauce over the browned bocce balls. Cover and simmer gently for 15–20 minutes, turning occasionally, until the meat is fully cooked and the mozzarella inside is melted.
- 5
Finish and Serve
Transfer the bocce balls to a serving platter or bowl, spooning extra sauce over the top. Garnish with fresh basil and serve hot as a Happy Hour appetizer with toothpicks or small plates.
