Method
Extracting Coconut Water
- 1
Open the coconuts
Place each young green coconut on a stable surface. Using a cleaver or heavy knife, carefully cut off the top to make an opening large enough to insert a straw or pour out the liquid. Be cautious and ensure the coconut is stable during this step.
- 2
Collect the water
Tilt the opened coconut over a clean bowl or container and pour out the coconut water. Repeat with the second coconut. You should get about 2 to 2.5 cups of coconut water in total.
- 3
Strain (optional)
If desired, strain the coconut water through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove any bits of shell or pulp.
Optional Flavoring and Serving
- 4
Add lime and sweetener (optional)
Stir in 1 tsp of fresh lime juice and 1 tsp of honey or sugar into the strained coconut water for added flavor. Adjust sweetness to taste.
- 5
Add mint and ice (optional)
Add a few mint leaves and ice cubes to a glass or pitcher, then pour the flavored coconut water over the top.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately while cold, or refrigerate the coconut water and serve chilled later.
