Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

Mix until a dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Mix Filling Ingredients

In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella, chopped meatballs, grated Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and black pepper. Mix well until combined.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 6

    Sauté Garlic

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 7

    Cook Tomatoes

Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and sugar to the saucepan. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. 8

    Add Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Calzone Assembly and Baking

  1. 9

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).

  2. 10

    Divide Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal portions.

  3. 11

    Roll Out Dough

On a floured surface, roll out each portion into a circle about 10 inches in diameter.

  4. 12

    Fill Calzones

Spoon a portion of the filling onto one half of each dough circle, leaving a border. Fold the other half over the filling and crimp the edges to seal.

  5. 13

    Bake Calzones

Place the calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

  6. 14

    Serve with Sauce

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
