Method

Preparing Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the sushi rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a saucepan, combine the rinsed sushi rice and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Microwave for 20-30 seconds until the sugar dissolves. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow it to cool to room temperature.

Preparing Fillings

  1. 4

    Prepare Vegetables

Thinly slice the cucumber and avocado lengthwise. Set aside.

  2. 5

    Prepare Fish

If using fresh salmon or tuna, slice it into long strips. Ensure the fish is sushi-grade.

  3. 6

    Prepare Nori Sheets

Lay out nori sheets on a clean, dry surface, shiny side down.

Assembling the Sushi Roll

  1. 7

    Spread the Rice

Wet your hands to prevent sticking. Take a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori sheet, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.

  2. 8

    Add Fillings

Place the cucumber, avocado, fish, and a small spread of cream cheese horizontally across the rice.

  3. 9

    Roll it Up

Starting from the bottom, roll the sushi tightly away from you, using the bamboo mat if you have one. Press gently to ensure it's compact.

  4. 10

    Cut the Roll

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces. Clean the knife with a damp cloth between cuts to ensure clean slices.

Serving

  1. 11

    Plate the Sushi

Arrange the sushi rolls on a platter. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
