Filo Pastry

Nut Filling

Honey Syrup

Method

Preparation of Nut Filling

  1. 1

    Chop the Nuts

In a food processor, combine the walnuts and almonds. Pulse until finely chopped, but not powdered.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large bowl, mix the chopped nuts with ground cinnamon and granulated sugar. Set aside.

Assembling Baklava

  1. 3

    Prepare the Filo

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan over low heat. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.

  2. 4

    Layer the Filo

Place one sheet of filo pastry in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat this process for 8 sheets, brushing each layer with butter.

  3. 5

    Add Nut Filling

Spread half of the nut filling evenly over the layered filo. Top with 4 more sheets of filo, brushing each with butter.

  4. 6

    Finish Layering

Spread the remaining nut filling over the top. Layer the final 4 sheets of filo, brushing each with butter.

  5. 7

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.

Baking and Syrup Preparation

  1. 8

    Bake the Baklava

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown.

  2. 9

    Prepare the Honey Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine honey, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

  3. 10

    Pour Syrup over Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot honey syrup evenly over the baklava.

  4. 11

    Cool and Serve

Allow the baklava to cool completely before cutting along the previously made cuts and serving.
