Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the 1 cup of white rice in a fine-mesh sieve or strainer. Rinse it under cold running water for about 1-2 minutes to remove excess starch, which helps prevent the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Measure Water

In a medium saucepan, measure out 2 cups of water. You can adjust this amount slightly based on the type of rice you are using, but 2 cups is standard for most white rice.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Add the rinsed rice and 1 tsp of salt to the saucepan with the water. If you are using butter or oil for flavor, add it at this stage.

  4. 4

    Bring to a Boil

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Keep an eye on it to prevent it from overflowing.

  5. 5

    Simmer the Rice

Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes. Do not remove the lid during this time as it traps steam.

  6. 6

    Check and Fluff

After 18-20 minutes, check the rice. If all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender, remove it from heat. If there is still water, cover and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Once done, remove the lid, and fluff the rice gently with a fork.

  7. 7

    Serve

White rice can be served immediately as a side dish or used as a base for stir-fries, curries, or other dishes.
