Hush Puppies

Honey Butter

Method

Hush Puppies

  1. 1

    Prepare the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Add Vegetables and Wet Ingredients

Stir in the finely chopped onion. In a separate bowl, combine the beaten eggs and milk. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are okay.

  3. 3

    Heat Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  4. 4

    Fry the Hush Puppies

Using a tablespoon or small cookie scoop, carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil. Fry in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, flipping halfway through.

  5. 5

    Drain and Serve

Remove the hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Keep warm until ready to serve.

Honey Butter

  1. 6

    Mix Honey Butter

In a small bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter and honey. Use a whisk or fork to blend until smooth and well combined.

  2. 7

    Serve

Serve the honey butter alongside the hot hush puppies for dipping.
