Method
Dough Preparation
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water (about 110°F or 43°C) and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Mix well.
- 3
Combine Ingredients
Once the yeast is frothy, add it to the flour mixture along with shortening or lard. Mix until a dough begins to form.
- 4
Knead Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5
First Rise
Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
Baking Preparation
- 6
Shape the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a loaf.
- 7
Second Rise
Place the loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover again and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- 8
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- 9
Prepare Cornstarch Topping
In a small saucepan, mix cornstarch and water over medium heat until thickened. Brush this mixture over the top of the loaves.
- 10
Bake
Bake the loaves in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- 11
Cool
Remove the loaves from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before slicing.
