Method
Old Fashioned Base
- 1
Prepare glass
Select a short rocks/Old Fashioned glass. If you prefer a slightly chilled glass, place it in the freezer for 5–10 minutes beforehand.
- 2
Add syrup and bitters
Pour 0.25 oz simple syrup into the glass, then add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. If you use a sugar cube instead of syrup, muddle the cube with bitters and a splash of water until dissolved, then proceed.

- 4
Add ice
Add one large ice cube (or several regular ice cubes) to the glass, taking care not to overfill—ice should come close to the rim but allow space for the ginger beer and garnish.
- 5
Express orange oils
Hold an orange peel over the drink, skin side down, and give it a firm twist to express the citrus oils over the surface. Rub the peel around the glass rim, then drop it into the drink.
Ginger Beer Topper
- 6
Top the stirred whiskey base with 2 oz cold ginger beer. Pour gently down the inside of the glass to preserve carbonation and to create a light effervescence. Give one very gentle stir (1–2 rotations) to integrate the ginger beer without flattening it.
Garnish
- 7
Optional: add 1 Luxardo or maraschino cherry on a pick and rest it on the rim or drop into the drink. Serve immediately with a short straw if desired.
