Method
Optional — Turbinado Simple Syrup (make ahead)
- 1
Make syrup
Combine 1 cup turbinado sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Warm over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is clear. Do not boil. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Transfer to a sealed container and refrigerate. Keeps up to 2 weeks.
Cocktail
- 2
Build
Place a large ice cube (or several ice cubes) into an old-fashioned glass.
- 3
Mix
In a mixing glass filled with ice, combine 2 oz Buffalo Trace bourbon, 1/2 oz turbinado simple syrup, and 3 dashes Angostura bitters. Stir briskly for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (mix reaches proper temperature and clarity).
- 4
Strain
Strain the chilled mixture into the glass over the prepared ice cube.
- 5
Garnish
Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the glass and giving it a firm squeeze to release the oils. Rub the peel around the rim, then drop it into the drink.
- 6
Serve immediately. Taste and, if you prefer slightly sweeter, add an additional 1/4 oz turbinado syrup and gently stir.
