Red Wine Base

Spice & Aromatics

Method

Red Wine Base

1

Choose wine

Select a bold, fruit-forward dry red wine (Zinfandel, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon). Measure 1 cup and pour into a large mixing glass or small pitcher.

Citrus & Sweetener

2

Add 1/4 cup fresh orange juice and 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice to the red wine. Stir gently to combine.

3

Add 2 teaspoons simple syrup and stir again. Taste and adjust sweetness by adding up to 1 teaspoon more simple syrup if needed.

Spice & Aromatics

4

Crack the cinnamon stick lightly with the back of a spoon to release aroma, then add the cinnamon piece and 2 whole cloves to the wine mixture. Let steep for 3–5 minutes, stirring once or twice to infuse flavor.

5

After steeping, remove and discard the cinnamon stick and cloves (or leave them for presentation if preferred).

Ice & Garnish

6

Fill a short glass or rocks glass with the large ice cubes (about 1 cup).

7

Strain the wine mixture over the ice, dividing evenly if making more than one serving.

8

Garnish with an orange wheel on the rim and optionally a lemon twist expressed over the drink and dropped in.

9

Serve immediately. Encourage the drinker to stir once or twice as they sip to keep flavors integrated.
