Fried Okra Directions
- 1
Prepare the Okra
Rinse the fresh okra under cold running water and pat dry with a paper towel. Slice the okra into ½ inch pieces, discarding the tops and bottoms.
- 2
Make the Batter
In a medium bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until well combined.
- 3
- 4
Coat the Okra
Dip the sliced okra into the wet mixture, ensuring each piece is well coated. Then, transfer the coated okra to the dry batter mixture, tossing to coat evenly.
- 5
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet or deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 6
Fry the Okra
Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking.
- 7
Drain and Serve
Once the okra is golden brown, remove it from the oil using a slotted spoon and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
