Method

Preparing the Patties

  1. 1

    Season the Beef

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly to ensure even seasoning.

  2. 2

    Shape the Patties

Divide the seasoned beef into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up while cooking.

Cooking the Patties

  1. 3

    Preheat the Grill or Skillet

Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add a little oil to prevent sticking.

  2. 4

    Cook the Patties

Place the patties on the grill or skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side. Flip the patties and place a slice of American cheese on each patty. Cook for another 3-4 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).

Assembling the Burger

  1. 5

    Prepare the Buns

While the patties are cooking, slice the hamburger buns in half and toast them lightly on the grill or in a toaster if desired.

  2. 6

    Build the Burger

On the bottom half of each bun, layer a leaf of lettuce, a slice of tomato (sliced from the medium tomato), a cooked burger patty with melted cheese, a few slices of onion (sliced from the medium onion), and a generous amount of pickles. Top with the other half of the bun.
