Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel and Cut Potatoes

Peel 2 lbs of potatoes and cut them into equal-sized chunks (about 1-2 inches). This helps them cook evenly.

  2. 2

    Boil Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add 1 tsp of salt to the water to season the potatoes.

  3. 3

    Cook Until Tender

Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes boil for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender.

Mashing

  1. 4

    Drain Potatoes

Carefully drain the boiled potatoes in a colander, allowing all the water to escape.

  2. 5

    Add Butter and Milk

Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add 4 tbs of butter and 1 cup of milk to the potatoes.

  3. 6

    Mash Potatoes

Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the potatoes until they reach your desired consistency. For creamier potatoes, you can use an electric mixer on a low speed.

  4. 7

    Season to Taste

Add 0.5 tsp of black pepper and additional salt to taste. If using, add 2 minced garlic cloves, and 0.5 cup sour cream for extra creaminess.

  5. 8

    Garnish

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and sprinkle with chopped chives for garnish, if desired.
