Method
Sodas (choose and serve)
Select cans
Choose a variety of canned sodas to offer—cola, lemon-lime, ginger ale and one flavored variety (orange, grape or fruit punch). Provide two cans of each variety so guests have options.
Chill cans (if not already cold)
Place unopened cans in a refrigerator for at least 2 hours to cool. If you need them cold quickly, submerge cans in an ice and water mixture for 15–20 minutes, or roll cans in an ice bath for 10–12 minutes to chill evenly.
Inspect cans
Before serving, check each can for dents, swelling or rust. Do not serve cans that are bulging or leaking. Wipe can surfaces with a clean cloth if dusty.
Optional garnishes & service
Prepare glassware and ice
If using glasses, fill each glass halfway with ice cubes (about 1/2 cup per glass). If you prefer to serve cans directly, place them on a tray over a bed of ice in an ice bucket or chilled pitcher to keep them cold.
Open cans and pour
Hold the can upright on a stable surface. With your thumb on top and fingers around the side, lift the pull tab straight up and back to open. Pour the soda gently down the side of the glass to reduce foaming; leave a little headspace (about 1–2 cm) to avoid overflow. If serving directly from the can, wipe the top with a napkin first and serve with a straw if desired.
Garnish and serve
Add a lemon or lime wedge to the rim of the glass or float it on top for lemon-lime and ginger-ale options. Add a mint sprig to flavored sodas if desired. Insert paper straws if using. Present four glasses or four chilled cans on a tray and suggest pairings (cola with burgers, lemon-lime with spicy dishes, ginger ale as a gentle palate cleanser).
Storage of opened cans
If you don't finish a can, cover the opening with plastic wrap or a reusable can cap and refrigerate. Consume within 24 hours for best carbonation and flavor. Discard if the can was left at room temperature for more than 6–8 hours.
