Method
Prepare Glass & Sweetener
- 1
Chill and sweeten
Chill a tall glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice while you prepare the soda. If using granulated sugar instead of simple syrup, dissolve the sugar (1 tsp) in the lemon juice (1 tsp) or a tablespoon of warm water until dissolved. If using honey, warm it very briefly (5–10 seconds) with the lemon juice to thin so it mixes more easily.
- 2
Place ice cubes into the chilled glass to about three-quarters full.
Build the Soda
- 3
Add flavor
Pour the chosen flavoring into the glass: add 1 tablespoon flavored syrup OR the prepared lemon/lime juice + dissolved sweetener mixture. If using fresh mint, gently clap 3 mint leaves between your palms to release aroma and add them to the glass.
- 4
Top with carbonated water
Slowly pour 2 cups cold carbonated water over the ice and flavoring. Pouring slowly preserves carbonation and prevents excessive foaming.
- 5
Stir gently with a long spoon or straw 2–3 times to combine sweetener and flavor without flattening the carbonation.
Finish & Serve
- 6
Garnish with a citrus slice on the rim and a sprig of mint if desired. Taste and adjust sweetness or acidity: add up to 1 additional teaspoon simple syrup or 1–2 drops lemon/lime juice if needed.
- 7
Serve immediately while cold and carbonated.
