Method
Prepare Glass and Coffee
Brew 1 cup of strong hot coffee. Use freshly brewed drip, pour-over, or French press and keep it hot.
Sweeten and Add Whiskey
Add 1 teaspoon brown sugar to the warmed glass.
Pour in 1.5 oz Irish whiskey (and the optional 0.25 oz liqueur if using). Swirl gently to dissolve the sugar into the whiskey.
Prepare and Float Cream
Lightly whip 2 tablespoons heavy cream until it just thickens and becomes pourable but retains a loose ribbon texture (do not overwhip to stiff peaks). You want cream that will float on the hot coffee.
Hold a spoon upside down over the coffee so the rim of the spoon is just above the surface. Slowly pour the lightly whipped cream over the back of the spoon so it gently floats on top of the coffee in a distinct layer.
Optionally grate a little nutmeg or dust with cocoa on the cream for aroma and presentation.
Serve immediately without stirring. Drink the coffee through the layer of cream so you get hot coffee with cool cream on top.
