Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F) and prepare an 8-inch round cake pan by greasing it with butter and lining the bottom with parchment paper.

  2. 2

    Melt Chocolate and Butter

In a heatproof bowl, combine the dark chocolate and unsalted butter. Melt them together over a double boiler or in the microwave, stirring until smooth. Allow to cool slightly.

  3. 3

    Mix Sugar and Eggs

In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and eggs until the mixture is light and fluffy.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the melted chocolate and butter mixture into the egg mixture, stirring continuously. Add in the vanilla extract and mix until fully incorporated.

  5. 5

    Add Dry Ingredients

Sift together the cocoa powder and salt, then fold into the chocolate mixture until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cake

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the center is set and a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cake

Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Berry Topping Preparation

  1. 8

    Prepare the Berries

While the cake cools, rinse the fresh strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries under cold water. Pat them dry with a paper towel.

  2. 9

    Slice the Strawberries

If using larger strawberries, slice them into halves or quarters, depending on your preference.

  3. 10

    Dust with Powdered Sugar

In a small bowl, sprinkle the fresh berries with powdered sugar to taste, gently tossing them to coat.
