Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Collard Greens

Wash the collard greens thoroughly under running water. Remove the thick stems by cutting them out, and chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces.

  2. 2

    Cook the Aromatics

In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

  3. 3

    Add Ham and Broth

Stir in the ham hock or diced ham, and pour in the chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

  4. 4

    Add Collard Greens

Once the broth is simmering, add the chopped collard greens to the pot. Stir well and allow them to wilt down.

  5. 5

    Season the Dish

Add salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and sugar to the pot. Stir to combine and let everything simmer together for about 30-35 minutes, or until the collard greens are tender.

  6. 6

    Serve

Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Remove the ham hock, shred the meat if desired, and mix back into the greens. Serve hot.
