Calamari

Method

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

In a bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  2. 2

    Coat the Calamari

Dip the cleaned and sliced calamari into the beaten egg, allowing excess to drip off. Then, dredge the calamari in the flour and cornmeal mixture, ensuring each piece is well-coated.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  4. 4

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari to the hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Making the Spicy Marinara Sauce

  1. 5

    Sauté Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

  2. 6

    Add Tomatoes

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.

  3. 7

    Finish the Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Just before serving, stir in the chopped fresh basil.
