Method
Prepare the Onion Rings
- 1
Slice the Onions
Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.
- 2
Make the Batter
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Gradually add the beer, whisking until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil's readiness by dropping a small amount of batter into it; it should sizzle and float to the surface.
Fry the Onion Rings
- 4
Coat the Onion Rings
Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off.
- 5
Fry the Rings
Carefully place the battered onion rings into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy.
- 6
Drain the Excess Oil
Using a slotted spoon, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Serve
- 7
Prepare Dipping Sauces
In small bowls, serve the ranch dressing and BBQ sauce alongside the crispy onion rings.
- 8
Enjoy
Serve the onion rings warm and enjoy them with your favorite dipping sauces!
